We changed

The Kop van de Singel, formerly just a parking and play area, is being transformed into a vibrant, welcoming entrance to Schiedam. The area is evolving from underutilized space into a mixed-use, multifunctional hub blending residential, retail, office, and cultural functions. Our design pays tribute to Schiedam’s heritage by referencing the iconic windmills in the new building’s architectural form.

Transformation

+ S’MAAK’s volume, with its sloped and jagged rooflines, dynamic façade, and varied residential layouts, creates a visually engaging and functionally rich building.
+ Incorporates housing, retail, office space, parking, and public-facing cultural programs (like galleries and restaurants) to create a layered and continuous experience for users.
+ The inclusion of townhouses, large balconies, roof terraces, and community-facing programs aims to encourage social interaction and urban living.

Climate

+ The residential units feature generous outdoor spaces—balconies, roof terraces, and garden views—which promote passive cooling, ventilation, and access to greenery.
+ Open facades and deep-set windows not only enrich the architectural quality but also improve energy efficiency.

Collaboration

+ The project is a collaboration between Blauwhoed (developer), Stats Architecten (architect), and Bouwgroep Moonen (construction), showing a collective vision.
+ The architects and developers worked closely to incorporate cultural storytelling (windmills, local identity) into the design, creating a contemporary yet respectful dialogue with the city’s past.
