We changed

We redefined Qingdao Bay Square by reconfiguring its spatial boundaries, embedding historical memory into the design, and integrating transportation with public life—turning the area into a cohesive civic space linking the railway station to the sea.

Transformation

+ Urban Identity: Turned the square into a “living room” for the city—where history, daily life, and tourism converge.
+ We created a multi-sensory civic space that links movement (train, walking, sea) with experience (sight, memory, leisure).
+ Merged visual rhythm, scale, and materials across new and old structures to harmonize the city’s temporal layers.

Climate

+ Microclimate Sensitivity: we added shaded colonnades and step terraces allow ventilation and sun protection for year-round comfort.
+ Seaside Adaptation: Design mediates between urban edge and coastline, offering resilience to sea-air exposure and seasonal changes.

Collaboration

+ Joint effort between MLA+ Muga and Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos brought together landscape and architecture.
+ Integrated Disciplines: Collaboration across architecture, landscape design, and transport planning unified heritage and function.
