Regional landscape and local culture were deeply connected in pre-modern times. Since the industrial revolution, this strong connection and need to “live from the land” is broken. Man, with the help of technology, has become independent of local conditions. However, with the extreme climate changes we are experiencing today, we now understand that the human dominance has a massive and negative impact on the planet. To change the egoistic, human-oriented mindset is a core mission of regenerative planning. Every site and every programme offer possibilities. This masterplan for an education and sports cluster on a central brownfield site offered a great chance to develop a positive relationship between nature and people right from the start. To do this for the school children of the regional capital was a valuable plus, because it will help to raise a new generation with more positive values towards nature.
The edges of the brownfield site are most valuable. The plan builds natural relationships along the waterfront, to a nature reserve, a hidden stream and an allotment garden zone. The main central landscape is inspired by regional biotopes and designed as a meadow to be home for local flora and fauna. The schools relate to this nature system as “meadow school”, “forest school”, and “sports meadow”. The young generation is invited to fill the spatial framework with their own ideas and experience in harmony with nature.
