How does the city of the future look like? That was the question asked to Markus Appenzeller. His take: Remarkably similar to how the city of today looks like – but it will operate completely differently. Climate change, technological progress and socio-economic changes will transform how we live in cities. But at the same time, the need to keep our carbon footprint limited will require us to rethink concepts of old and new. We will re-use rather then creating things from scratch. We will use technology to optimize what we have rather than inventing completely new systems, and we will use space more intensely and with many more different uses in one spot than we did in the past. All of that will largely take place in the existing city.
