Crossing the edge into Banshan Park changes who is host and who is guest. While in the city humans lead, in the park it is nature. The edge is a zone, where all forms of life meet. It includes interventions to let nature thrive (again), and designs to let humans participate in this enriching experience of a healthy planet.
Banshan Park is located on the mountains and overlooks Shenzhen’s Yantian district and the islands of Hong Kong. It cultivates the edge and the qualities it offers. Nature is allowed and supported to thrive. Humans only have limited access to contain their impact. It shows how both worlds come together positively and create extra biodiversity for all forms of life.
Usually we perceive big cities as human oriented space. We can experience them in their totality by climbing on the highest buildings, by boarding a ship and looking at them from a distance, or by entering nature that starts at its edges. Banshan Park avoids making the scenery a one shot spectacle. Along the edge, one can leave the city every day, wander through nature and enjoy the curated views onto the city and its scenery. It leaves lasting memories - not made but cultivated by humans.
