Project

Dreven is one of the largest transformation and densification locations in The Hague Southwest, built according to a master plan from the 1950s by Willem Martinus Dudok. Our proposal embraces the urban design principles of the ‘Beeldkwaliteitsplan’ which was prepared by Palmbout. The ambition is to develop a contemporary reinterpretation of the ‘’Wederopbouw architectuur’’ responding to the context of the existing architecture in Bouwlust en Vrederust with an articulated plinth in white brick, an expressive façade open towards the surroundings and a communal inner garden to compensate for the existing green.

The result is a modest, yet carefully detailed social housing block. The defining element of the design is the repetition of ingredients in the façade – protruding balconies and floor-to-ceiling window openings. The repetition of these components as an urban detail creates a layered facade image with a high emphasis on verticality of the volume still maintaining the clear visibility of each individual home.
