Project

The competition site is located in the northwest of Karlsruhe’s city center, directly adjacent to two major green spaces: the Rhine floodplains to the west and the Hartwald forest to the east. It is surrounded by residential neighborhoods of varying size and density, and opens southward onto a large green open space where development is excluded for the foreseeable future.

The spatial concept grows naturally from the existing urban fabric: the surrounding districts extend into the site, forming five development areas of similar size. At the heart of the layout lies a generous green core, well connected to the existing network of public spaces and transport infrastructure. By opening toward the south, greenery flows into the site and is distributed throughout, creating park-edge situations for a large number of adjacent buildings.

The highest building densities are concentrated along these park edges, ensuring that as many homes as possible have direct access to green space. Within the interior of each development area, lower building typologies are introduced, benefiting from private gardens and a more intimate, residential atmosphere.
