Project

This project originated from a special land use type - collective land rental housing. MLA+ hoped to create a community-oriented youth neighborhood, which aims to provide high-quality yet affordable rental housing. The whole complex consists not only of the rental apartments, but also elderly housing, health center, commercial functions, bus station and a large variety of sport facilities and green spaces. In our project Beijing Micropolis, we integrate the western idea of residential courtyard blocks with local tradition. Two axis public-private and active-calm define 4 courtyards with different characters. Arches on the ground level open the courtyards, and allow free pedestrian flow through all outdoor spaces to support social life and create a bigger sense of an open community. This variety of public spaces, outdoor amenities and spatial qualities supports a rich social life.
