Project

Our proposal draws consistently from the site, takes up existing qualities, activates them and develops them further. The concept understands the historically grown city island between Teltower Damm, Martin-Buber-Strasse and Kirchstrasse as a whole. It develops a building structure that takes up the history of the site, mediates between the different scales in the neighborhood, at the same time creating a strong spatial quality with identification potential. An urban arch (Zehlendorfer Bogen) is derived from the historic urban structure and stretches between St. Paul's Church and the passage to Teltower Damm. The existing city hall building is understood as an equal part of the whole, completed by an L-shaped building towards the interior of the site and thus upgraded in the overall composition. Together with the arch, the L-shaped building forms the New City Hall Square (Neuer Rathausplatz), the center of the new city hall-complex. Radially arranged, access routes from the public street space to this square are created in order to establish an optimal network with the neighborhood. These access routes create visual connections and incentives to use the square and spend time there.

Program

Feasibility study for the extension of the townhall of Berlin-Zehlendorf on its current site. The brief was to design ca. 40.000 m2 gross area above ground on a 2,3 ha site, incorporating the existing townhall from the 1920s. The design will be base for the upcoming binding land use plan (Bebauungsplan) of the site.
